Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for March meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Dr. Max Fitzgerald of Rush Oak Park on preventing falls, Oak Park Temple member Gordon Hellwig on his experiences as a foreign service officer with the US State Department, STAR members DeeDee and Maury Mufson on their life in southern West Virginia, and Marla Goldberg, the Community Outreach Liaison of the Council for Jewish Elderly (CJE).
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In March, STAR will meet as follows:
Thursday, March 6th - STAR's own Sandra Sokol and Janet Kelenson, both former elected officials in Oak Park, will discuss the upcoming local elections. In person early voting begins March 17th, and election day is April 1st.
Thursday, March 13th - Our presenter is Devin Andrews, MSW, LSW. Devin is the Caregiver Support Specialist at the Senior and Disability Services division at Oak Park Township.
Thursday, March 20th - Our presenter is Har Zion member Michael Zmora. Michael will share the story of how Temple Har Zion was built in 1950 after a decade of struggle against local opposition. He will also discuss the struggles faced in the building of Oak Park Temple B'nai Abraham Zion.
Thursday, March 27th - Our presenter will be Cecily Mango, who will share her experiences as a Foreign Service Officer
