Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for January meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom except for the January 2nd meeting, which will be in person only at the Onion Roll. Please join us in person if you can for our meetings!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple, Oak Park Temple member Gordon Hellwig on his experiences as a foreign service officer with the US State Department, STAR member Professor Bob Munman on the art of trompe l'oeil, and STAR member Alan Hoffstadter on "The One Thousand Children: Rescue and Resettlement." In the Holocaust, 1.5 Million Jewish children perished. The United States rescued little more than 1,000 of those at risk, including Alan's mother.
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In January, STAR will meet as follows:
Thursday, January 2nd - We'll gather at The Onion Roll restaurant at 11:30 am (please note this special time for January 2nd only). We'll have lunch and schmooze.
Thursday, January 9th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or movie
Thursday, January 16th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or movie
Thursday, January 23rd - We'll host Prentice Butler, Executive Director of The Neighborhood Bridge. Prentice is a Chicago-born civic leader who is strongly committed to social justice and civic engagement. The Neighborhood Bridge serves individuals and families in our communities by connecting them to high-quality human services to help them thrive.
Thursday, January 30th - A chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or movie
