Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for November meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple, Oak Park Temple member Gordon Hellwig on his experiences as a foreign service officer with the US State Department, STAR member Professor Bob Munman on the art of trompe l'oeil, and STAR member Alan Hoffstadter on "The One Thousand Children: Rescue and Resettlement." In the Holocaust, 1.5 Million Jewish children perished. The United States rescued little more than 1,000 of those at risk, including Alan's mother.
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In November, STAR will meet as follows:
November 7th - Oak Park Temple member Sabrina Rahman will share information on AI for Older Adults
November 14th - Oak Park Temple member Carol Gerson, MD, will speak on "Jewish Views on Reproductive Choice in Text and Tradition"
November 21st - possibly Charles Shapera, Executive Director of West Suburban Temple Har Zion, will speak on his experiences as temple director and his background as a musician (tentative)
November 28th - NO STAR (Thanksgiving)
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
If you'd like more information about STAR, contact your Temple office. We at STAR feel like a small community learning and growing together. Please join us!
