Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for August meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presenters have included Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple, Oak Park Temple member Steve Gevinson on his experiences teaching in public and private high schools, STAR member Bob Munman on the history of art prints, Oak Park Temple member Roy Plotnick on his work as a paleontologist, and STAR member Alan Hoffstadter on "The One Thousand Children: Rescue and Resettlement." In the Holocaust, 1.5 Million Jewish children perished. The United States rescued little more than 1,000 of those at risk, including Alan's mother.
STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In September, STAR will meet as follows:
September 5th - Our presenter is Oak Park Temple member Michael Awe. Michael will discuss the inaugural Oak Park Illinois Film Festival, which is takes place this September 12th and 14th in Oak Park. Mike is vice president of the Festival board.
September 12th - a chance to schmooze and perhaps a special guest or a movie
September 19th - Oak Park Temple member Gordon Hellwig will speak to us about his experiences as a member of the US Foreign Service
September 26th - our guest will be Ken Trainor of the Wednesday Journal
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
