STAR
Suburban Thursday Afternoon Retirees, better known as STAR, meets every Thursday from 1-3 pm, except on Jewish and national holidays. This vibrant group includes attendees from West Suburban Temple and Oak Park Temple, as well as the broader community. We are planning for our November meetings to be available both in person at West Suburban Temple Har Zion and via zoom, except where noted. Please join us in person if you can!
STAR, a joint endeavor of both Temples, offers a place for candid discussions on a variety of topics as well as an opportunity to socialize and to support each other. Recent presentations have included an Illinois Holocaust Museum docent-led talk on Nazi Propaganda: Fueling Hate and Genocide, a presentation by Abby Schmelling on Waldheim Cemetery, and presentations on the Oak Park Public Library, the Takeout 25 Program, and the Monuments Men. STAR also recently hosted our own Mark Friedberger on his family's history, and the CEO of the Age Options agency. STAR has longterm partnerships with Rush Oak Park Hospital, Dominican and Concordia Universities, Brookdale, Oak Park and River Forest Townships, Arbor West Neighbors, Jewish Child and Family Services and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In November, STAR will meet on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 30th:
November 2nd - Cantor Agnes Valdman of Oak Park Temple will meet with us
November 9th - Peggy Ann Spitzer, a Research Professor at Stony Brook University, will present on "Female Empowerment and Climate Action: Why we need Feminist Paradigm Shifters for Environmental Social Justice"
November 16th - Sheila R. Brown, TV, film & advertising executive, will join us in person to talk about the growing entertainment industry in Illinois (nearly $700M in film production in 2022) and the efforts being made to ensure that the people working behind the camera better reflect the world around us
November 23rd - Thanksgiving, STAR does not meet
November 30th - Our presenters will be Temple members who attended the recent rally in support of Israel on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
Watch your temple's weekly bulletins for updates on STAR programming.
